End of Season

Yesterday we lost to Eastlake in the KingCo 4A playoffs. While we did not enjoy every moment of the game, I think we can all agree that making playoffs in this league is a big accomplishment. Four of the top ten teams in the state happen to be in our league and Eastlake is #4. All of the coaches complimented us on our progress and were impressed by our players. Selfishly, we'd like to keep our seniors around one more year but also exciting to see them move on to bigger and better things. Each made a positive impact on this program that will be felt for years to come. Thanks to all of you for all of your hard work, humor, and talent. We will miss you and wish you the best in your new adventures.

On Monday, November 9, we will be celebrating all of our players (JV and Varsity) at the Roosevelt All-Sports banquet. Please plan on attending with your parents.

KingCo 4A Playoffs

We beat Inglemoor tonight 1-0 to advance to the KingCo 4A playoffs for the first time in a long time. Congratulations, Riders, let's keep this ball rolling.

Don't quote me but I am pretty sure this is how this shakes out:

  • Game Saturday, October 31 at Eastlake (Redmond plays at Woodinville) at 3pm.
  • From there, we'd play Tuesday, November 3 vs. the winner of Redmond vs. Woodinville.
Therefore, we will be training tomorrow afternoon at 3pm (due to conflicts with drama and AP classes) at Magnuson. Get some rest and ice anything that is sore.

LET'S DO THIS, RIDERS!

Monday & Tuesday

Varsity: Please bring $10 to training on Monday. Trust me.

Tuesday we play our last regular season game on Tuesday (5:30pm (JV) and 7:30pm (Varsity) ) at Ingelmoor. There is a bus for JV at 4:15 and Varsity will carpool.

Senior Night

As you all know by now, Thursday night is Senior Night. Also, as previously posted and changed in the calendar, the JV game will be at 3:30pm at Magnuson, Field 6 (2:15pm early dismissal...we can use all of the parent support we can get to get the kids quickly to Magnuson) and the Varsity game is at 5pm at Memorial (be at the field at 3:45pm).

Senior parents: please be at the field no later than 4:40pm to help us honor your kids.

Also, if you have objections to the change in schedule and early Varsity game, please feel free to contact Al Hairston at the Seattle Public Schools.

Let's go Riders! Beat Woodinville for our last home stand!

Rosters vs. Issaquah

Hey Riders,

JV bus leaves at 4:00 pm and the Varsity bus leaves at 5:25 pm (there will be a return bus for both games).

Please be sure to bring ALL of your gear tomorrow on the bus. Don't forget: white fleece, both yellow and green jerseys, both white and green shorts, and all three socks: yellow, white, and green. GK's: gloves, black shorts, all socks (bring black if you have them), both jerseys, shinguards, and cleats. Varsity: black pants. Also, please don't forget to bring some food, your homework, your attendance sheets, and money in case we stop to get some food before or after the game.

Also, as I am sure you saw on the Twitter update, Senior Night is Thursday. Unfortunately, our Varsity game has been changed to 5pm vs. Woodinville at Memorial Stadium. Senior parents need to be there before the game as we honor the veterans. Please plan on being at the stadium no later than 4:45pm. The JV game will be at 3:30pm at Magnuson Field 6.

Rosters for Tuesday (Thursday will be different due to the two locations):

The Fourth Quarter

Great training today that focused around diving headers and slide tackling (in the mud)! Very fun to see the girls really get after it and not shy away from getting a little messy.

Tomorrow we play at Summit/Hale (NEAC) at 5:30pm and 7:30pm against inner-city rival Garfield. Should be a spirited match. JV, please arrive at the game, ready to go, by 4:45pm. Varsity, please be there by 6pm with ALL of your gear.

Roosevelt will play four more games for the regular season. If we do well, we will have an opportunity to play in the KingCo 4A championship tournament. Let's go Riders!

Don't forget to follow us on Twitter!

Contrary to the Seattle Times, we are not playing Lakeside tomorrow. Or anytime in the near to distant future.

Friday's Training

Just a reminder that Friday's training is at Magnuson at 8:30am. It's been on the calendar linked to the blog for over a month at 8am but we thought we'd let the girls sleep in a little! :)

Bring your runners, a towel or yoga mat, and water.

Good win vs. Ballard!

Special Training Today

Stephanie {Lopez} Cox is training our girls today!

Steph's training was one of the procured auction items for the team account last year at the Booster Auction. Thanks to the Blonden family, this training is available to everyone. We do ask that you consider contributing to our fund so that we can "match" the Blonden contribution, rather than doing a big fundraising effort this year. Please make checks out to Roosevelt Girls Soccer and bring them to practice anytime between now and the end of the year.

Stephanie's training is a very special treat, as she is an Olympic athlete, National Team member, and professional player for the WPS Los Angeles Sol. Steph is a wonderful person and we are so excited to have her at Magnuson today!

Monday, October 5, 2009

Locations

We are at Hale on Tuesday (vs. Eastlake) and Ingraham on Thursday (vs. Ballard). Good head's up, Selena!
Please be at the game 45 minutes before for JV and an hour before for Varsity.

TEAM PHOTOS (reminder)

Just a reminder that all Roughrider Soccer players should be in the gym, right after school, in uniform, for team photos. We will train at Magnuson immediately thereafter.

Perspective.

We had a wonderful meeting today about our team goals and values. The girls were able to articulate specific and measurable goals as well as the way in which they intend to represent themselves, their families, and Roosevelt High School. I left feeling encouraged and positive. This program is experiencing a shift in the right direction and I am looking forward to progress.

I was reading about a program that a friend of a friend has created that is helping the women in the Congo that have been through terror and awful experiences that none of us will ever comprehend. Reading about their experiences certainly puts things in perspective and really, at the end of the day, we are all just trying to enjoy the sport that we love. I am absolutely encouraged and impressed with the commitment the student-athletes make to being the best they can be, regardless of the circumstances. I am hopeful that we can continue on this positive plane.

The upcoming games will be rather competitive and FUN. Please plan on bringing your A game and OWN it, no matter what time your game is on Thursday or Tuesday. Please know that the bus will be round trip for both games. All JV players are welcome to stay for the varsity game and sit on the bench. We welcome any and all positive encouragement!

The rosters will be posted in Chris Holland's room. They will remain the same for the next two games, barring injury or H1N1!

Newport & Skyline This Week!

Just a few reminders:
  • Team photos for Monday have been rescheduled for October 5.
  • Practice Monday will be at 3pm at Magnuson (both teams) and on Wednesday, for early dismissal, we will train after school, still at Magnuson, at 1:30pm (has been on the calendar for a month).
  • Games this week are vs. Newport (Memorial) and at Skyline (bus provided)
  • Buses for Skyline games: JV 4pm | Varsity 5:30pm
  • Grade checks are this week!

Merritt in Seattle!

Today at 1pm, the University of San Francisco Dons from the WCC will take on the Seattle University at Championship Field (Seattle U). Merritt Peterson, one of our distinguished alums, plays for USF and would love to see the Roughriders out to the game on this sunny Sunday!

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Lake Washington & Redmond, etc.

Varsity will travel to Lake Washington today at 5:30pm on the round trip school bus. On Thursday, we will do the same. Let's beat LW and Redmond!

Unfortunately, due to low attendance, illness, injury, and ineligibility, our JV team had to cancel games this week. We look forward to getting some players back next week and for full attendance at training.

Please make sure you are taking care of yourself, both with injuries and illness. We have many players that are a little bit sick and would hate for it to get worse or affect the rest of the group. Wash those hands!

Players must turn in their attendance reports each game day to be able to compete. As you all know, it's mandatory to attend all classes on game day or else the student athlete is ineligible to compete. If a player has a dentist appointment and it's excused and approved by the attendance office, she would be eligible. If a player skips class and plays in the game, we must forfeit the game. The varsity players all know that these attendance reports are available in the front office and near our AD's office. Each game day, coaches will be collecting the signed forms and evaluating eligibility before determining the participating members for the day.

Lastly, we are taking team photos on Monday after school. Please plan on being in the gym, with your full uniform on, by 3pm. We will train after the photos are complete at Magnuson.

Thanks!

Games, Games, and More Games

We have three games this week. First at South Kitsap Tuesday, then Wilson HS (JV & Varsity) at SW Athletic Fields Thursday, and finally, at Bothell (JV & Varsity) on Saturday at 1pm.

Also, as you all know, there is a potluck on Wednesday after practice at Magnuson. Caity Vieira and Christi Seymour (manager of both JV & Varsity!), have sent out a number of emails in regards to the potluck. Thanks to all the parents that have volunteered to feed our hungry athletes and their parents!

Please be sure you are getting lots of rest, drinking lots of fluids, and stretching well. We are going to need all the healthy bodies we can muster up for these games.

Game vs. Prep

As previously suspected, our game vs. Seattle Prep has been rescheduled to Saturday, September 5 at 10am at Roosevelt High School. The JV game has been postponed and will probably be rescheduled for the next week.

Varsity players should always arrive an hour before the game and have all of their gear on by 45 minutes before game time. Plan ahead for ankle taping, shoe polishing, etc.

Preseason thusfar...

The varsity team has been named, we are getting ready for our first game, and we just watched some wonderful soccer today at Husky Field (Portland Pilots vs. Washington Huskies). Preseason has been fun and tough but that's how we roll in Kingco 4A!

Please be sure to add our calendar in your bookmarks.

Tryout FAQ (reposted for newcomers)

FITNESS EXPECTATIONS:

We have fitness and conditioning minimums for varsity, junior varsity and JVC team selection. All players must participate in fitness even if they do not expect to be selected for the varsity or junior varsity teams. The high school soccer season is too short for student athletes to expect to "get into shape" during the season. We play our first game only 11 days after tryouts begin. It takes at least eight weeks to be in "game" shape. The average high school varsity soccer player can run more than 5.5 miles a game. Prospects need to come to tryouts already in game shape or they will more than likely subject themselves to injury. We want the kids healthy and fit so they can participate and have fun!

WHEN ARE THE SUMMER TRAINING SESSIONS?

Summer training begins as soon as the spring sports are completed (state tournaments). We have offered training sessions for everyone twice weekly all summer long, in addition to access to the weight room and weight training coach.

DO I HAVE TO GO TO SUMMER WORKOUTS?

Summer workouts are optional, but highly recommended. A significant amount of important preparation for a successful soccer season involves the summer sessions. Also, it is a great opportunity to meet the other student athletes, coaches and make an impression.

WHEN ARE TRYOUTS?

Official tryouts start Monday, Aug. 24, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. at Magnuson. Please refer to the calendar for any other scheduling questions.

HOW MANY TEAMS WILL THERE BE?

There will be three teams for the fall 2009 season: Varsity, Junior Varsity and the JVC team.

ARE THERE PLAYER CUTS?

Yes. We have more players trying out than we have space for in the program. Seniors that tryout must make the varsity team to participate in the soccer program. Juniors must make the varsity or junior varsity teams. Sophomores and freshman must make the JVC team or better.

ARE ALL TRYOUT DATES MANDATORY?

Yes. Summer jobs and vacations can be planned around the August 24, 2009 tryout date. RHS Soccer happens to be quite competitive. In addition, each player must have 10 days of training before a game to be eligible. Be sure to consider tryout dates when planning summer vacations. Missing tryout sessions for any reason may jeopardize your chances of making a team. This includes missing due to non-registration. Please let your parents/guardian know how important tryout participation is to your goals of playing soccer at RHS.

IF I AM SICK OR INJURED SHOULD I STILL COME TO TRYOUTS?

Injured student athletes should still come to tryouts if they are to be considered for placement on a team. If a student athlete is too sick to come to tryouts, they MUST contact the coaching staff or team manager.

WHEN ARE TRYOUT RESULTS ANNOUNCED?:

Tryout results will be posted by Friday Aug. 30, 2009, if not beforehand.

HOW ARE TEAMS FORMED?

Team coaches and assistant coaches help with the evaluation process. Each student will have ample opportunity to showcase her skills, soccer knowledge and fitness at tryouts. Specifically, the coaches look to evaluate the four components of a soccer player: (1) technical ability - speed of play, successful application of skill at a high speed and while under pressure (2) tactical awareness and application - speed of thought, ability to read the game and make decisions that are best for the team (3) physical development and conditioning - speed, quickness, strength, agility, aerobic capacity (4) psychological - maturity, competitive spirit, attentiveness, leadership, communication, mental toughness, cooperation.

• Roster size and composition: We have a moving roster for each week. Therefore, spots will be earned during training prior to the game based on effort, performance, attitude and health.

• All student athletes, regardless of their grade level, are eligible to make varsity.

• Student athletes who do not make a team are encouraged to continue their participation in soccer through alternative opportunities or to go out for another RHS fall sport. The coaches are available to discuss these opportunities if a spot is not offered on a team.

• Because a student athlete was on varsity or junior varsity last year does not guarantee she will make varsity or junior varsity this year.

ATHLETIC REGISTRATION

Get you physical during the summer and turn in all of your paperwork before August 17 to ensure that your paperwork gets processed on time. As previously mentioned, www.RHSseattle.org offers online resources for registration. Athletic Registration is your responsibility! Without it, you cannot participate in Roosevelt Athletics.

If you have any other quesitons, please be sure to read through the entire blog, refer to the calendar, and then contact the team manager or coach at rooseveltsoccer at gmail dot com.

Preseason Begins on August 24

Preseason begins in a few weeks! Please be sure to turn in all of your paperwork, including physicals, etc., before August 17 to guarantee your eligibility. Otherwise, you will not be permitted to participate. All of the information you need can be found here, on the blog, and at Roosevelt's main page.

Please check out the season's calendar. Of course, it's subject to change but it's a good start.

Incoming Freshmen | Change in Schedule

RHS Soccer Families,

Please advise any incoming freshmen that they are permitted to train with us, assuming they have turned in all necessary paperwork (see below).  Please pass along this information to all interested players.

And, as noted at today's enthusiastic training, we will not be practicing Thursday, Monday, or next Thursday due to the many conflicts with the end of the year activities and finals.

We will see you on June 22.

"8th grade kids can participate now, they need to have the physical and
insurance, just like our high school students.  As long as the kid is "ours" (assigned to Roosevelt) has all of
their paper, (Physical, insurance, permission) then they can
participate.  The best way to get this done is to start them out on
their fall paperwork, see the website for copies.  This gets them into
the system, and all they have to do is pay their fees and ASB and they
are good to go as soon as practices start in August."

Fields for Fall

Fantastic news!

We have been assigned to the new fields at Magnuson from 3-5pm daily starting in late August!

After spending the last 20+ years at fields all over Seattle, including having our C team at a different location (View Ridge), we will finally have all three teams at the same, local location.  Considering the alternative was Queen Anne Bowl, I think we should all be thankful!

June

Training for 2009 season begins June 1st at RHS. We will train Monday and Thursday from 2:45-4:15. After Monday (June 1st) session, we will have a meeting for about 30 minutes.

TEAM MORITZ

Andrew Moritz, the big brother of one of our student-athletes and a former Eckstein, Roosevelt, Franklin and University of Washington student-athlete, was recently diagnosed with the very rare desmoplastic small round cell cancer. His blog is here. The Moritz family has been a part of Roosevelt athletics and the Seattle Public Schools for years and years. We hope you will consider visiting the blog and donating to help offset Andrew's travel and treatment costs.

Thank you!

Michelle French :: UPDATE!

UPDATE from FRENCHIE (January 7, 2009)
"I had a PET scan on Monday and have been waiting for the results the past couple days...my scan results said "resolved"! Very exciting news! :) Of course I still have to finish out my chemo treatments, 4 down, 2 remaining! I can't believe after 2.5months, "LuLu" is gone, and I'm just having to make it through 2 more treatments! :)
Thank you again for all of your continuous love and support!!! I'm officially in the home stretch! :)"

Hi Roughriders,

Michelle French, my teammate from ODP (when we were 13 and 14 years old!), the University of Portland, and the Seattle Sounders was recently diagnosed with cancer, specifically: "Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma and Schelorsis of the Mediastinum", a Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Frenchie would never ask for any assistance but she is certainly deserving of support on a grand scale.

Frenchie is not only a genuine, happy, enthusiastic, and really fun friend but she also happens to be a superb soccer player. Frenchie helped us get to three Final Fours (College Cup) in college as well as being a member of the U.S. Olympic Team in Sydney 2000. Frenchie also played three years in the WUSA. She started feeling dizzy and short of breath about a month or so ago while training for the new Women's Professional Soccer League, which prompted her inquiry with her doctor.

Eastside FC has organized a fundraiser for Frenchie by way of bracelets that read, "Team Frenchie" and "Just Kickin' It". All of the donations (100%) will go directly to Frenchie's medical costs, as the bracelets were underwritten. If any of your are so inclined, please order a bracelet to support Frenchie. She loves the Roughriders!

Here’s a partial description, in Frenchie’s words:

“(the tumor). . . is a mass the size of a lemon, with the feeling of an eraser. . . The mass is wrapped around my Superior Vena Cava which pumps/drains blood from the upper part of my body... The doctor hasn't seen this type of case for about 6 years....I told him "go big, or go home right!?". It's always nice to be a rare case study.....

I'm totally, completely, absolutely ready to kill this bugger and get back to my amazing teams! As the saying goes: "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!!!!". And that's just what I will do!!!!”

To support Frenchie in her fight against cancer, we are wearing red wristbands with “Team Frenchie” and “JUST KICKIN’ IT” printed on them! To order wristbands (minimum order/donation is $50), please send your order form (available at Eastside FC) and check, made payable to "Team Frenchie", to the address below:

L. Whatley
615 Hillside Dr. East
Seattle, WA 98112

If you would like to make a direct donation (without ordering bracelets), please send your check to:

Team Frenchie
P.O. 880
Issaquah, WA 98027-0032

Questions? Please contact: lwhatley@comcast.net

Thank you for your support!

ODP and Player Exposure

As you know, getting opportunities to play at the next level (college) are few and far between.  We cannot encourage you enough to take a stab at the Olympic Development Program.  ODP will give you additional exposure, away from your club team, in addition to great coaching (usually!) and travel opportunities.  The more you can play and get coached by different coaches, the better.

The local ODP tryouts were just announced so please make plans to attend and have fun!

Misc. Questions

We have received some miscellaneous questions and would like to address the entire group:

1) FIRST AID/INJURIES:
The coaches have basic First Aid equipment (band-aids, tape, pre-wrap, etc.) but to solely depend on this kit is irresponsible. Each player should take the responsibility to have their own equipment and bring them in their bag to each training session and game. Items such as moleskin, neosporene, Band-Aids, ace wraps, tape, pre-wrap, and ice packs in addition to any allergy modalities such as an inhaler or an epi-pen. When we are away, we always borrow ice and use the trainer for the opposing teams. Unfortunately, we are an inner-city school and football comes first. Therefore, the trainer cannot physically attend every sporting event. He can attend some JV & Varsity games but the JVC games fall during the time when he is at football most of the time. If you have an injury, we expect you to check in with the school trainer, Andrew Little, and he can help assess your injury as well as provide many resources for orthopedic physicians and surgeons and the like to help you get x-rays and physical therapy if need be. We highly recommend that every athlete get seen by an orthopedic for athletic injuries. Many times, pediatricians error on the side of extreme caution and sometimes will advise things like, "Don't do anything for your sprained ankle for 3-6 weeks." This will put the player out for the rest of the season. Without physical therapy and movement, the ankle will take an eternity to heal and the player will miss out on a lot of the season for no reason.

2) MOVING ROSTERS & TRAINING:
Movement between the teams is based on performance, effort, attitude, as well as current injuries and illnesses and coach discretion. The reason we have moving rosters is to encourage competition and discourage complacency.

3) COMMUNICATION:
The best communication is the conversations we have with the girls every day at training and at the games as well as the blog and emails from team managers. Please check this blog regularly and communicate with your daughter or parents.

4) FUNDRAISING:
Fundraising is vital to our survival in terms of coaching staff, uniforms, an extra goal, pennies, balls, and other pertinent equipment. We would ask that parents encourage the girls to attend and participate in fundraising just as they would a game.

Skills Homework!

Hey Riders,

Our friend, Viet Nguyen, who played at both UW and for the Seattle Sounders (and briefly coached at Roosevelt), has put together some videos of skills that you can practice (daily!) to improve your ball work. He added some good music too!

Enjoy!

Roughrider Alums

Just wanted to give everyone some updates on the seniors that have recently graduated from the halls of Roosevelt.

Merrit Peterson is playing (and will study, a lot!) at the University of San Francisco . She has made the travel squad (top 18) and is loving it! The Dons compete in the West Coast Conference, considered the best conference in the U.S. with teams like the University of Portland and Santa Clara University. We think Merritt will fall in love with "The City" and it with her!

Toni Carnovale will compete in the Big Sky Conference, representing Portland State University. Wynne and Meghan think that Toni will be a force in the back line for the Vikings.

Benecia Brogan will get the chance to nutmeg Toni every so often as she is playing (she started her first game!) at Idaho State University, also a Big Sky Conference team. Bee is going to get everyone smiling in Pocatello (as soon as she recovers from her hamstring pull!).

Maddy is an excellent soccer player but she is still having trouble with her back. We aren't quite sure whether or not Occidental will see her in uniform this fall or not. Maddy would definitely make an impact in So-Cal.

Lori Sako is playing soccer at Oberlin. She reports that the summer training at Roosevelt prepared her well for her next soccer challenge. Ohio will love Scooter!

Congratulations, Class of 2008!
