Tryout FAQ (reposted for newcomers)
FITNESS EXPECTATIONS:
Summer training begins as soon as the spring sports are completed (state tournaments). We have offered training sessions for everyone twice weekly all summer long, in addition to access to the weight room and weight training coach.
Summer workouts are optional, but highly recommended. A significant amount of important preparation for a successful soccer season involves the summer sessions. Also, it is a great opportunity to meet the other student athletes, coaches and make an impression.
Official tryouts start Monday, Aug. 24, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. at Magnuson. Please refer to the calendar for any other scheduling questions.
There will be three teams for the fall 2009 season: Varsity, Junior Varsity and the JVC team.
Yes. We have more players trying out than we have space for in the program. Seniors that tryout must make the varsity team to participate in the soccer program. Juniors must make the varsity or junior varsity teams. Sophomores and freshman must make the JVC team or better.
Yes. Summer jobs and vacations can be planned around the August 24, 2009 tryout date. RHS Soccer happens to be quite competitive. In addition, each player must have 10 days of training before a game to be eligible. Be sure to consider tryout dates when planning summer vacations. Missing tryout sessions for any reason may jeopardize your chances of making a team. This includes missing due to non-registration. Please let your parents/guardian know how important tryout participation is to your goals of playing soccer at RHS.
Injured student athletes should still come to tryouts if they are to be considered for placement on a team. If a student athlete is too sick to come to tryouts, they MUST contact the coaching staff or team manager.
Tryout results will be posted by Friday Aug. 30, 2009, if not beforehand.
Team coaches and assistant coaches help with the evaluation process. Each student will have ample opportunity to showcase her skills, soccer knowledge and fitness at tryouts. Specifically, the coaches look to evaluate the four components of a soccer player: (1) technical ability - speed of play, successful application of skill at a high speed and while under pressure (2) tactical awareness and application - speed of thought, ability to read the game and make decisions that are best for the team (3) physical development and conditioning - speed, quickness, strength, agility, aerobic capacity (4) psychological - maturity, competitive spirit, attentiveness, leadership, communication, mental toughness, cooperation.
• Roster size and composition: We have a moving roster for each week. Therefore, spots will be earned during training prior to the game based on effort, performance, attitude and health.
• All student athletes, regardless of their grade level, are eligible to make varsity.
• Student athletes who do not make a team are encouraged to continue their participation in soccer through alternative opportunities or to go out for another RHS fall sport. The coaches are available to discuss these opportunities if a spot is not offered on a team.
• Because a student athlete was on varsity or junior varsity last year does not guarantee she will make varsity or junior varsity this year.
Get you physical during the summer and turn in all of your paperwork before August 17 to ensure that your paperwork gets processed on time. As previously mentioned, www.RHSseattle.org offers online resources for registration. Athletic Registration is your responsibility! Without it, you cannot participate in Roosevelt Athletics.

their paper, (Physical, insurance, permission) then they can
participate. The best way to get this done is to start them out on
their fall paperwork, see the website for copies. This gets them into
the system, and all they have to do is pay their fees and ASB and they
are good to go as soon as practices start in August."

Michelle French :: UPDATE!

UPDATE from FRENCHIE (January 7, 2009)
"I had a PET scan on Monday and have been waiting for the results the past couple days...my scan results said "resolved"! Very exciting news! :) Of course I still have to finish out my chemo treatments, 4 down, 2 remaining! I can't believe after 2.5months, "LuLu" is gone, and I'm just having to make it through 2 more treatments! :)
Thank you again for all of your continuous love and support!!! I'm officially in the home stretch! :)"
Hi Roughriders,
Michelle French, my teammate from ODP (when we were 13 and 14 years old!), the University of Portland, and the Seattle Sounders was recently diagnosed with cancer, specifically: "Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma and Schelorsis of the Mediastinum", a Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Frenchie would never ask for any assistance but she is certainly deserving of support on a grand scale.
Frenchie is not only a genuine, happy, enthusiastic, and really fun friend but she also happens to be a superb soccer player. Frenchie helped us get to three Final Fours (College Cup) in college as well as being a member of the U.S. Olympic Team in Sydney 2000. Frenchie also played three years in the WUSA. She started feeling dizzy and short of breath about a month or so ago while training for the new Women's Professional Soccer League, which prompted her inquiry with her doctor.
Here’s a partial description, in Frenchie’s words:
“(the tumor). . . is a mass the size of a lemon, with the feeling of an eraser. . . The mass is wrapped around my Superior Vena Cava which pumps/drains blood from the upper part of my body... The doctor hasn't seen this type of case for about 6 years....I told him "go big, or go home right!?". It's always nice to be a rare case study.....
To support Frenchie in her fight against cancer, we are wearing red wristbands with “Team Frenchie” and “JUST KICKIN’ IT” printed on them! To order wristbands (minimum order/donation is $50), please send your order form (available at Eastside FC) and check, made payable to "Team Frenchie", to the address below:

Misc. Questions
1) FIRST AID/INJURIES:
The coaches have basic First Aid equipment (band-aids, tape, pre-wrap, etc.) but to solely depend on this kit is irresponsible. Each player should take the responsibility to have their own equipment and bring them in their bag to each training session and game. Items such as moleskin, neosporene, Band-Aids, ace wraps, tape, pre-wrap, and ice packs in addition to any allergy modalities such as an inhaler or an epi-pen. When we are away, we always borrow ice and use the trainer for the opposing teams. Unfortunately, we are an inner-city school and football comes first. Therefore, the trainer cannot physically attend every sporting event. He can attend some JV & Varsity games but the JVC games fall during the time when he is at football most of the time. If you have an injury, we expect you to check in with the school trainer, Andrew Little, and he can help assess your injury as well as provide many resources for orthopedic physicians and surgeons and the like to help you get x-rays and physical therapy if need be. We highly recommend that every athlete get seen by an orthopedic for athletic injuries. Many times, pediatricians error on the side of extreme caution and sometimes will advise things like, "Don't do anything for your sprained ankle for 3-6 weeks." This will put the player out for the rest of the season. Without physical therapy and movement, the ankle will take an eternity to heal and the player will miss out on a lot of the season for no reason.
2) MOVING ROSTERS & TRAINING:
Movement between the teams is based on performance, effort, attitude, as well as current injuries and illnesses and coach discretion. The reason we have moving rosters is to encourage competition and discourage complacency.
3) COMMUNICATION:
The best communication is the conversations we have with the girls every day at training and at the games as well as the blog and emails from team managers. Please check this blog regularly and communicate with your daughter or parents.
4) FUNDRAISING:
Fundraising is vital to our survival in terms of coaching staff, uniforms, an extra goal, pennies, balls, and other pertinent equipment. We would ask that parents encourage the girls to attend and participate in fundraising just as they would a game.

Skills Homework!
Our friend, Viet Nguyen, who played at both UW and for the Seattle Sounders (and briefly coached at Roosevelt), has put together some videos of skills that you can practice (daily!) to improve your ball work. He added some good music too!
Enjoy!

Roughrider Alums
Merrit Peterson is playing (and will study, a lot!) at the University of San Francisco . She has made the travel squad (top 18) and is loving it! The Dons compete in the West Coast Conference, considered the best conference in the U.S. with teams like the University of Portland and Santa Clara University. We think Merritt will fall in love with "The City" and it with her!
Toni Carnovale will compete in the Big Sky Conference, representing Portland State University. Wynne and Meghan think that Toni will be a force in the back line for the Vikings.
Benecia Brogan will get the chance to nutmeg Toni every so often as she is playing (she started her first game!) at Idaho State University, also a Big Sky Conference team. Bee is going to get everyone smiling in Pocatello (as soon as she recovers from her hamstring pull!).
Maddy is an excellent soccer player but she is still having trouble with her back. We aren't quite sure whether or not Occidental will see her in uniform this fall or not. Maddy would definitely make an impact in So-Cal.
Lori Sako is playing soccer at Oberlin. She reports that the summer training at Roosevelt prepared her well for her next soccer challenge. Ohio will love Scooter!
Congratulations, Class of 2008!
